MADAYIPARA

MADAYIPARA Perched upon a hillock near Pazhayagandi in the scenic city of Kannur, Madayipara is renowned as one of the most beautiful landscapes in the entire state of Kerala. Often compared with the famous Tulip Gardens of Amsterdam, Madayipara is better known as 'the land of flowers'.

Madayipara is an extremely beautiful laterite plateau which narrates unique tales of vibrant hues in each season. This beautiful landscape creates wonders in colors. While the rain cloaks the place in a lush green blanket, the Summer brings with it the shades of the sun and Spring makes it a sea of blue.

Madayipara is an ecological paradise rich with wide species of flora and fauna. It has a rare collection of insect- eating plants. It is also home to hundreds of bird and butterfly species and a pond in the shape of a handheld mirror.

The place has religious significance as well. The Madayi Kavu that hosts the Pooram festival and the Vadukunda Shiva Temple makes this place a favourite pilgrim destination.

This pristine hill will soon get more attention as a centre of tourist attraction. Less known to the leisure and travel world, Madayi Para, will, in the near future benefit from a government project that proposes to transform the area into a cultural village. But, Madayi Para, even otherwise, is a place worth visiting, especially for those who would like to walk about and explore it own their own.

In bo-diversity, Madayi Para region contains about 300 flowering plants, about 30 varieties of grass, and several insect-eating plant species. It is also home to several rare medicinal herbs, which are sought by people from near and far off places. Coming to avian life, Madayi Para sustains about 100 species of butterflies and about 150 species of birds. Among the biggest butterflies in the world, the Atlas butterfly is a regular visitor to Madayi Para.

The land is more beautiful around the month August-September when the monsoon leaves the Northern Kerala because flowers of different colours blooms creating a blue and white carpet all around the landscape. The upcoming cultural village project of the state government aims to sustain and keep in tact the physical as well as historic importance of Madayi Para, and at the same time encourage visitors to savour the unparalleled attractions of this beautiful terrain.
